STAMFORD, Conn. (WTNH)– Police in Stamford have arrested a 12-year-old girl for bullying. They say she was relentlessly picking on a classmate at a private school.
“We were informed by a parent of a 13-year-old girl that she said her daughter is being constantly harassed, intimidated and bullied at school,” said Lt. Diedrich Hohn, Stamford Police Department.
Stamford police arrested a 12-year-old student for disorderly conduct, after they say she bullied a classmate at a private middle school.
According to Investigators, the victim was taunted, harassed and pushed.
“She really couldn’t learn in that kind of environment,” said Hohn.
Police say school administrators were notified but the bullying continued.
“If it gets up to the level of schoolteachers couldn’t handle it, we had to get involved,” said Hohn.
The bullying became so intense that the 13-year-old victim told her parents she was contemplating suicide and that’s when police stepped in.
“We believe the only way to stop this type of behavior was to arrest the 12-year-old suspect,” said Hohn.
In August, a Greenwich High School sophomore committed suicide. Police say 15-year-old Bart Palosz shot himself at his home after the first day of classes.
According to classmates, he was a victim of relentless bullying. Greenwich police say they have not been able to identify any individuals whose actions might have contributed to Palosz’s death.
“Obviously after what happened in Greenwich and other stories you hear about, this bullying going to the extreme, once we heard these allegations that she was contemplating suicide we immediately got involved,” said Hohn.
In order to protect the children involved, police won’t release the name of the school.
The 12-year-old suspect, was released to the custody of her parents. Stamford police say if this happens again, there will be more arrests made.
